9:26 am - vurt services

nigelw
I'm taking a look at making vurt a bit more failure-resistant. If anyone is using vurt for more than email, please let me know.

12:24 pm - Um... is Vurt down again?

fraerie
Or is it simply my shitty network (lunchtime connections frequently suck).

I can't get to www.vurt.net via a web browser. Can access other sites - like this one for example.

10:31 pm - Everything should be working properly now

nigelw
Everything should be working again now - sending, receiving, webmail, IMAP, etc.

There have been a couple of changes.

1. webmail now requires SSL
2. SMTP authentication (putting in a password to send mail using vurt.net) will only allow encrypted authentication unless you're using SSL
3. IMAP and POP authentiaction (logging on to read your mail with a mail client) will only allow encrypted authentication unless you're using SSL
4. vurt.net now has a real (paid-for) SSL certificate, so if your computer complains about the certificate there's probably something wrong - please tell me about it so I can figure out what's going on.

What this means: everything's more secure, but some very old mail clients may chuck a spazz.

Edit: There's an experimental new webmail interface at https://www.vurt.net/roundcube/ - if anyone's interested in playing with it, please give me feedback. It's apparently nicer and more modern than squirrelmail, and the authentication just worked (unlike squirrelmail which got futzed somehow)

7:14 pm - Vurt up

nigelw
Vurt is back up. You can read your email, but receiving new email and sending new email is unavailable until I've finished cleaning up almost 8G of spam from the mail queues. At this rate, it looks like that'll be around 10 or 11 tonight, assuming I don't find more.

Thankfully only a single user account was compromised, not the whole machine, so we don't have to rebuild the whole thing again.

Vurt is down while we investigate a security breach. Hope to get it back up this evening.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the spam rules have been upgraded on Vurt.
Everything appeared to go well enough but, as usual if your mail starts behaving strangely let me know.

Yeah - the routing on the tentacle rack is fucked again. I'm not sure what Internode keep fucking up with the c-class - but i guess at least they know what the problem is and how to fix it.

Bear is on the phone to Internode now - hopefully services will resume quicker than they did the other day.

So far - I am highly unimpressed with the quality of the networks in Fawkner - roll on the NBN!

Tentacle issues!

There was some issue with internode routing the tentacle c-class to the server rack that hosts vurt.net and various other tentacle machines.

Internode appears to have fixed the issue and it should be all working again now.

4:38 pm - Tentacle Downtime

kitling
Hi Guys

We are having some electricians around tomorrow to do a bunch of electrical work on the house.

This means that at some point tomorrow there will be some downtime for vurt.net and the other machines in the tentacle rack.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

We did have a telstra tech over this morning and the internet no longer drops out when we get a phone call which is a good start.

neefsck
As part of our ongoing commitment to ourselves our users, the spam rules for vurt have been updated.
As usual, if anything has been b0rked, or you're having problems with your mail then let me know, and we'll try and sort it.

Remember we can put both whitelists and blacklists in place if you need them - Once again, just drop me an email.

Hallo vurt users,

After lengthy deliberations my dear kitlings, I have upgraded the rules for spamassassin on vurt.
This means that hopefully you'll see a drop in the amount of spam thats coming through to your mail folders.
However, I'd like you to keep an eye on your mail.

vurt.net and extro.vurt.net are back up, on new hardware.

Shell accounts and email accounts have been purged as per previous posts, so if we've deleted your account, let me know and I'll copy it across from the old machine. Also, tut tut for not telling me when I asked last week.

The greylisting software (anti-spam stuff) has *not* had it's database copied across, so mail may be slow until it discovers who you talk to and adds them to the list of known people. By slow I mean maybe 15-20 minutes to deliver mail, not days.

Please let me know if you notice anything gone screwy - well, more screwy than it was last week. :)

5:05 pm - Vurt hardware move

nigelw
Hi everyone,

We're about to move vurt.net to new hardware, and in the process we're going to be removing inactive email accounts and shell accounts.

If you are using vurt.net for email or shell access, please comment or email me at so that I can make sure that we don't remove your account. Anyone who has logged in in the last 7 days (to fetch mail or with ssh) doesn't have to worry, we've already got you on the list of people to copy over to the new machine. :)

Thanks,
Nigel

P.S. Comments will be screened for privacy.

11:36 am - Uptime, downtime, uptime, downtime

kitling
When I got home from AAV this morning Scythe was down again. I've rebooted it a few times and its up again now.

We brought a new server yesterday, this one has fail over, so hopefully next time we are away and the router goes down, it should simply switch over to the second back up router. This new machine has the advantage of also being rack mountable, fanless (so quieter) and draws less power. We can also put vurt.net into, giving vurt.net a desperately needed upgrade (the box it is in currently is very old).

If any vurt users (and other tentacle users) would like to donate some money towards the cost of the new machine we would be very grateful.

Vurt.net is a free service and you get what you pay for. We apologise for the downtime, but we are allowed to go on holiday. All we can promise to do is fix it as soon as we can once you let us know there is a problem. Hopefully this new router/server should be a great help in increasing the reliability of the services provided in the tentacle rack.

The new machine should be delivered today. There will be another downtime once we install and configure the new machine as we switch everything over.

Thanks to thorf and seedygirl, Vurt should now be back online, along with the tentacle rack et all.

Expect a teeny bit of downtime once people figure out a more permanent fix.

12:35 pm - Vurt Update.

neefsck
In a nutshell :
The gateway box to vurt and the tentacle rack has futzed itself.
It is not a routing/BGP issue, and its not a matter of power cycling the modem or just switching the box back on.

Non Nutshell version :

Preliminary investigations indicate that its a power supply, however the only spare I was able to find and slot in got power to the board, kicked the fans and devices on but that was it.

So there could be something deeper happening also.

Right now, I cannot afford to replace the PSU, and probably will not be able to until the end of the week at the earliest.

If you really need things to be up and running - then we need a ATX supply which will run a Pentium II.
I have told Nigel and Rene and they're happy to reimburse folk should it be necessary.

I am happy to arrange a time to help anyone who wants fix this access the house (I have keys and alarm codes)

So right now, there are two options ;

Immediate Fix : If you want it up ASAP then someone ponies up a PSU and I'll arrange for you to get access to the house and fix things.

Delayed Fix : You wait until I get paid, then wait for me to find a new PSU and get a few hours to replace it.
Most likely the weekend at the earliest.

My apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Something went very wrong with our routing yesterday. It was an issue at Internode's end. It only affected the routing for the tentacle rack. So we didn't notice for sometime as the home internet works fine. They fixed it initially and everything worked for 10 minutes or so. Of course we didn't notice it broke again as the home network kept working. Later Megan let me know it was still broken and an hour on the phone discussing the weirdness that is our accounts later - they got corporate techs out of bed and fixed the routing issue. It took Internode a fair while to chase down the routing issue, but they stayed in touch with us, ringing us with updates each hour.

This is the first time I've seen serious tech fail on Internode's part and once alerted to the problem - their customer service was excellent.

Also - apparently we have 10 static IPs we knew nothing about, this is in addition to our Class C, go figure.

I don't know if there tech support is an good if you aren't a business customer. But when we first called they asked as to test some stuff that was going to take 5 minutes or so. I held onto the phone while Nigel plugged bits in and asked wouldn't it be easier to call you back? And he explained that they were pretty busy and we'd spend more time on hold. I like a company that isn't pressuring its call centre staff to reduce call times and encouraging focus on tech support and good customer server instead.

So yeah - when people ask us to recommend ISP's - there is a reason we say Internode.

In other news - I apologise for any inconvenience caused by the tentacle rack being down most of yesterday and encourage people to know that they can sms or call me once you notice an issue with vurt.net.

Absolutely nothing.

More specifically, tinkering with spamassassin.
I've updated the spam ruleset and you should hopefully see a drop in the amount of spam making it to your inbox, and the stuff that does, I hope will be correctly classified.

No, this is not a post telling you that its all broken.
Au Contraire my little kitlings!
Vurt mail seems to be spinning along in its own special little way.

However, I'm here to tell you, that should you be getting email that's classified as spam, that *isnt* spam, then there's something you can do.

We can 'whitelist' certain addresses which will stop the specified email being marked. This is most likely the easiest way my darlings, and all it involves is sending an email to your friendly gamecat at vurt with the details , and he'll make sure its all ok.

Its being sucky and not accepting mail from external sources.
My apologies, I will attempt to fix this as soon as possible.

EDIT:
Not only is vurt mail back up and running (at least to my testing)
Postfix should now be marking spam emails as *****SPAM*****

So you can start to filter your mail using the filters of your choice.

I have set the sensitivity on the mail to semi high, so it might be good for you to pay attention to your mail to make sure nothing is being marked as spam, that shouldn't be.

As always, if there's any problems, drop me a line here, and I'll take a look at it.

Hi guys - there's a mail purporting to be from tech-admin@vurt.net asking you to click a link and "update your certificates". This is totally bogus, and going to that site will in all likelihood result in your computer getting syphilis (or a botnet node).

If you've already done it, you should get your computer disinfected. I recommend boiling it for at least 20 minutes. Be sure to allow it to dry before turning it back on.

We need to re-arrange one of the racks tonight and finally move all the hardware into the new rack properly. This will probably mean some downtime for the tentacle rack as we may as well take advantage of the time to do some re-cabling as well.

That said, any downtime will be of a brief duration as we will do our best not to disrupt services more than absolutely neccessary.
